A few weeks ago we posted a few images of the new e8000 STePS series mounted to a shiny Pepper. We have been bombed with messages regarding this mad, mad machine and I thought it might be worthwhile to do a little specs rundown and hopefully answer any outstanding queries you cargo crazies have……
Ok, first and foremost…this is the first cargo bike to incorporate the e8000 series system. It is powerful, very powerful, yet the transitions are smooth, natural and predictable and it matches any other system on the market at this stage.
The motor puts out a maximum of 250W of power and a peak of 70Nm of torque, while the battery is a 500Wh Lithium Ion design that’s mounted to the frame. There are three assistance modes: Eco, Trail and Boost, with the latter giving a maximum of 300% assistance. You also get a walk assist function to help deal with the mass on the machine when you’re off it.
The display unit and controller will be instantly familiar to anyone that’s used Shimano’s Di2 electronic shifting system, with the assistance setting being controlled via a Firebolt switch and a small colour display to show settings such as speed, range, assistance mode and more. It’s extremely neat and sleek, much more so than any other system on the market today.
Thanks to the E-Tube interface, you can adjust any number of settings in the system should you wish to via a Bluetooth connection. As you’d expect, it’s fully compatible with Di2 gearing and when used like that the derailleur takes its power from the main battery.
So here is a rundown of components:
Frame: T6 heat-treated, 7005 aluminium designed for Shimano STePS e8000 motor.
Fork: Chromoly steel with tapered steerer tube.
Kickstand: Aluminium with replaceable feet.
Headset: 1″ ⅛ FSA Orbit XII , 1 ½” tapered 1” ⅛.
Steerer arm: Chromoly steel with machined fittings and rubber covered balljoint.
Dropouts: Aluminium,machined and replaceable.

Motor: Bottom bracket mounted for low centre of gravity and light; 2.8kg. 250W/70Nm Torque max output.
Battery: High capacity, 504Wh and low charging time of 4 hours; 2.62kg.
Crankset: Hollowtech II style, 38 tooth chaining.
Shifter: XT di2
Rear Derailleur: XT di2
Front wheel: Novatec hub, sealed bearings, 10mm axle, laced to Alex 36H Supra rim.
Rear wheel: Novatec hub laced to Alex 36H Supra rim.
Cassette: Shimano XT 11-42
Tyres: Schwalbe Kojak 20″ x 1.35mm, 26″ x 1.35mm, extra set….
Fenders: Plastic, black.
Brakes: Shimano Zee 4-pot disc brakes , 180mm Shimano rotors
Handlebar: Thomson Trail, 750mm, 31.6 mm alloy riser bar, black.
Stem: Thomson X4 50mm, black.
Stemlifter: EasyUp 100mm of adjustment, black.

Saddle: Original Bullitt Racing Seat from Velo, black.

Front lights: Busch Müller Lumotec IQ2 Eyc powered from main Shimano battery.

There we have, in all it’s glory. One little footnote to add is that at this stage we are only going to be doing this series in murdered out Classic (black). We are really looking forward to launching this properly and will be taking orders from early November. It’s a killer bike and rides beautifully. Hope you all like it too.
